The Sydney Fringe

The Sydney Fringe is an alternative arts and culture festival held for the first time in September 2010 in the inner west of Sydney, Australia.

The Sydney Fringe festival is an initiative of the Newtown Entertainment Precinct Association.[1] The inaugural festival director is Kris Stewart,[2] who was previously the director of the New York Musical Theatre Festival.

Previous Sydney Fringe Festivals

A Sydney Fringe Festival ran from 1994 to 2002 in Bondi, founded by producer Megan Donnelly. The Live Bait Festival, a successor to the Sydney Fringe Festival, also operated out of Bondi from 2003–2004 and was co-produced by Michael Cohen and Glenn Wright.[3]

Venues

The Sydney Fringe in 2010 will operate in a festival precinct encompassing a number of venues in the Newtown/Marrickville/Enmore area.[4]

Disciplines

The Sydney Fringe festival disciplines include theatre, dance, cabaret, music, visual arts, sports and games, film, digital arts, comedy, books, poetry, kids and family shows and special events.

Model

The Sydney Fringe, taking place in September, is not attached to the Sydney Festival, which takes place in January. It is a curated festival (like the New York International Fringe Festival) as opposed to an open access "unjuried" festival (the model used by the Edinburgh Fringe Festival).[2]

Submissions for the 2010 festival opened on 29 January 2010 and will close on 1 April.[5]
